HMPV virus: Bharadwaj says govt hospitals fully prepared in case of exigency

In the wake of two Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases reported in Karnataka, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Monday assured complete arrangements in city hospitals to handle any potential rise in respiratory illness as per the advice of health ministry.

In the wake of two Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases reported in Karnataka, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Monday assured complete arrangements in city hospitals to handle any potential rise in respiratory illness as per the advice of health ministry.

He directed the health secretary to physically inspect three Delhi government hospitals on a daily basis, starting from the largest ones, and also submit a report to him regarding the same.

Bharadwaj also instructed the state health department to be in touch with the Union Ministry in view of timely updates regarding the preparedness across the national capital against HMPV cases.

He asserted that there must be no delay in action, asking to bring any related issues to him immediately over phone, in case any directives are needed.

The health secretary has also been asked to report about the Essential Drug List (EDL), medicine and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) bed availability, condition of equipment and the Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen generation plants, availability of Data Entry Operators (DEO) on a daily basis at the Out Patient Department and In Patient Department.

The minister also asked the official to ensure whether Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) related to acute respiratory illness is in place at the hospitals.

The minister in an urgent communication to the health department has also mentioned that HMPV is already circulating globally, while cases have been reported in various countries.
