A three-term councilor, Abbasi had strongly opposed singing of Vande Mataram in the House meetings. Abbasi had remained three-time corporator from Ward 89. This time the seat was reserved for woman, so he managed a SP ticket for his wife Nazreen, who also won the election.

According to SP (city) Maan Singh Chauhan, on the complaint of Abbasi’s brother Abid, a case has been registered at Lisari Gate police station against unidentified people.

On Saturday night, Abbasi and his supporters had gone to thank voters of his ward for electing Nazreen. It is believed that someone poisoned the sweets he was offered during the tour.

Post-midnight, Abbasi started vomiting blood and was admitted to a hospital where his condition is stated to be critical.

Abbasi shot to limelight over his firm stand against singing of Vande Matram inside the House during meetings. He had confrontation with BJP corporators and Mayor over the issue. Once he had even slapped a BJP corporator, Tahseem.
