Economic blockade will not affect Manipur polls, says CEC Zaidi

Chief Election Commissioner Naseem Zaidi on Wednesday said the ongoing economic blockade in Manipur will not affect the state assembly elections.

"Economic blockade will not impact poll process in Manipur, all arrangements made to ensure free and fair election" Zaidi said.

The United Naga Council (UNC) had been imposing indefinite economic blockade in the state since November 1, 2016, against the creation of seven new districts the by state government bifurcating the existing ones.

Assuring smooth movement of election officials and security personnel, the CEC said there is a priority and petrol, diesel will be available sufficiently for poll process.

"We have undertaken a very in-depth review with our district officials and also with the state officials. As far as the election process is concerned there is a priority and sufficient availability of petrol, diesel for poll process. There would be no problem regarding it and all poll personnel will assist us" Zaidi said.

"20 general and 20 election-related police observers, 20 expenditure observers and seven awareness observers have been deployed to monitor election-related activities" Zaidi added.

The 60-seat assembly will go to polls in two phases – on March 4 and March 8, with 168 candidates in the fray for the first phase in 38 assembly constituencies.

Of the 60 seats, 38 hill and 22 valley constituencies will go to polls on March 4 in the state.
