In a major blow to Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led Madhya Pradesh government, the Election Commission (EC) on Saturday disqualified Cabinet Minister Narottam Mishra from membership of Assembly for 3 years.

According to reports, Mishra was accused of not accounting amount spent on paid news in his election expenses.

Based on the evidence presented before it, the EC found Mishra guilty in a paid news case of Assembly election 2008 and disqualified him for three years.

Earlier, the EC had registered a case under section 10 A and summoned him several times but the minister was skipping from appearing before the poll panel.

According to reports, one complainant Rajendra Bharti had approached the EC in 2012 alleging that Mishra had paid for a series of "news" reports published in various newspapers ahead of the 2008 assembly elections to enhance his prestige among voters without accounting for that expense.

Mishra had subsequently approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking quashing the inquiry by the Election Commission. But, the high court and subsequently the Supreme Court had rejected Narottam Mishra's plea.

Narottam Mishra is considered to be number two in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan cabinet in Madhya Pradesh and he is also the Minister for Public Relation in the Madhya Pradesh government.
