In an untoward incident on Saturday, seven people got severely injured after a temporary structure (pandal) collapsed near the Gate no. 2 of the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.

According to police, the incident took place at around 11 a.m. when a tent which was being set up for a marriage function collapsed, however, there were no reports of any death in the incident, a police official said.

The total number of injured persons reported in the incident so far is around 29, out of which 18 were taken to AIIMS trauma centre.

The dimension of the temporary structure (pandal) was around 30 x 60 meters and after a corner of the structure tripped, it led to the collapse of the entire framework, the police said, as per information received from people on ground.

Initially when the police reached the spot they got the information that around 25- 30 workers who got trapped under the structure, while the sportspersons, locals and the police staff which was present around the the spot began to help in rescue of the trapped workers.

Fire department team also reached the spot and started the rescue operation, while the injured were rushed to the AIIMS trauma centre.

The structure was being prepared for a wedding function and the exact cause behind the unfortunate incident is yet to be known.

The fire department personnel also reached the spot.

As per the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) trauma centre, they started receiving the patients at around 11.52 a.m.

A total of seven patients admitted in the AIIMS emergency department sustained severe injuries, while eleven sustained moderate injuries, an AIIMS official said.

The patients attended immediately in the emergency department, while necessary examinations, investigations and treatment was currently being provided to them, the AIIMS official added.
