Aimed at enhancing the basic education level of municipal students, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) will start a ‘Buniyad Project’ soon, under which special orientation of master trainers will take place.

Briefing the press on the future plans of the education department at the Civic Centre on Friday, SDMC Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat said as per the report of the National Achievement Survey the result of Maths and language subjects of third and fifth standard students of SDMC were not as per expectations. However, she said these results are better than Class eight result of Government of GNCT schools.

“Due to this very fact, Education Department of SDMC is starting a Buniyad Project from April 2018 to enhance the basic education level of its students. Under this project a special orientation of master trainers will be organised from 26 to 28 February for assessment of using Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) tools,” said Sehrawat.

According to the plan of the education department, in coming months the basic education status of students of Class 2 and 4 in maths and languages will be assessed with ASER tools. The services of teachers of SDMC, Sarv Siksha Abhiyan, representatives of NGOs and trainees of DIET will be utilised.

After assessing the abilities of the students of these classes, special summer camps will be organised in all schools. In these summer camps teachers will pay special attention to weak students so that before schools reopen after summer vacations they will be able to achieve a minimum standard in language and mathematics. In July the basic level of the students will again be assessed on ASER tools.

After the reassessment, students who achieve grade level performance will be called Ujjwal, those who achieve medium level achievement will be called Utkarsh and those who need to work hard will be called Udyam. During July and August this year, classes will be held on performance-based grouping. The cooperation of parents will be solicited in PTMs to send the children to summer camps, said Sehrawat.

She also stated, “From this year one section of nursery and first class of all schools will also impart education in English medium.”

The Mayor said overall development of the students is the main idea behind this project. Age limit for admission in nursery class has been reduced from 4+ to 3+ due to which this year there is an increase of 15 per cent in enrollment.

The corporation will upgrade one school in each zone from the coming year. Next year four schools of the corporation will impart education up to Class 8.

Sehrawat said, “Keeping in view the present scenario and security of the students, the process of deploying civil defence guards has been initiated. In girls schools, women security guards will be deployed and nannies will also be employed for taking care of students of nursery sections.

CCTV cameras in 62 schools have already been installed and tender for installation of CCTVs in remaining schools have been floated by the IT Department. It is expected that by March all schools will get CCTV cameras.”
