Subia Parveen, daughter of a Jamia Millia Islamia’s (JMI)’s electrician Kalimuddin Ahmad, has been selected for a prestigious 10 month-US education programme on a scholarship.

A tenth-grade student of the JMI-affiliated Jamia Senior Secondary School, Subia has been selected for the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) scholarship, sponsored by the US Department of State.

She has been studying in the Jamia School from nursery class and is said to be a bright student. She has appeared in the Class 10 Board examination this year.

“The programme I have been selected for is a culture-based 10-month programme. I applied for this scholarship in October 2018 when the US department visited our school and a few students were shortlisted by our teachers for the scholarship. A total of 4-5 students were shortlisted from our school to go through the selection process.

“During the scholarship programme, I will learn about the American culture and traditions for over 10 months,” said Subia.

“The selection process consisted of four rounds on the national level. The first round was about our personal details and our qualifications; the second round involved speaking skills and introduction; the next round was entirely about the writing skills; and the last round took place at the American Embassy with selected students from all over India which was also based on writing skills but it was tougher than the previous one,” added Subia.

She will be leaving for her US education programme in August 2019. Currently, she is waiting for her tenth grade Board exam results.

The JMI applauded her hard work. “The selection process for this programme (YES scholarship) has been very competitive and it’s a proud moment for both Subia and Jamia. She has received several prizes in education and co-curricular activities in the school and outside too. She aims to become a scientist someday,” said AP Siddiqui, the varsity’s registrar.
