Four women among six people perished in a fire that broke out on Thursday evening in a building at the ZP block in North West Delhi’s Pitampura, as per the fire department.

The deceased have been identified as Rakesh Gupta (62), Renu Gupta (62), Shweta (30),  Santosh (25), Kirti (25) and Shanu Verma (27), all but one residents of the building.

The fire that originated from the first floor of the building soon spread to the floors above, according to local sources. However, the cause of the fire could not be ascertained as yet.

While eight fire tenders were pressed into action to douse the flames, fire officials managed to evacuate and shift seven people from the house to the hospital.

According to a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official, a fire call was received from the aforementioned locality at around 8.07 pm. The caller informed about the fire on the upper ground and first floor of the four-storey building.

A case under appropriate sections of the law has been registered in the matter and an investigation initiated to ascertain the exact cause of fire, a police official said.

The police have confirmed that seven people were rescued by the Fire Department with the help of police personnel.
