The temperature in Delhi dropped further on Wednesday with the maximum settling at 15.6 degrees Celsius, four points below the season’s normal, the India Meteorological Department said.
According to the weatherman, Delhi on Wednesday clocked a minimum temperature of 7.3 degrees Celsius, while shallow fog was witnessed at several places across the city.
The weather office has forecast minimum and maximum temperatures to hover around 7 and 17 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
Many homeless were seen around bonfires, in a bid to keep themselves warm, while many of them took refuge at the night shelters operated under the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) and other temporary sheds put in place by the government in a view to save those without a roof on their head from the biting cold conditions prevailing in the city.
The IMD has said that the minimum temperatures during past 24 hours at 0830 hours on Tuesday are in the range of 6-9°C over most parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, West UP and Rajasthan.
As per the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), “predominant surface wind is likely to be coming from North/Northwest directions in Delhi with wind speed 04-10 kmph and mainly clear sky with shallow fog in the morning on 04.01.2024 and 05.01.2024.”
Though calm, the winds are likely to further send chills down the spine as mercury has witnessed a dip, and earlier, the IMD had forecast the likelihood of cold wave conditions at isolated pockets at several places across northern region including Delhi.
On the other hand, Delhi’s average Air Quality Index(AQI), which continued to be in the ‘very poor’ category here, was recorded at 341 on Wednesday, according to the Central Pollution Control Board(CPCB).
According to the air monitoring agency IITM, “The air quality is likely to remain in Very Poor category from 04.01.2024 to 06.01.2024. The outlook for subsequent 6 Days: The air quality is likely to remain in the Very Poor to Poor category,” agency’s bulletin said.
