In an incident which reflects apathy at its peak, a 72-year-old man was found abandoned in his own house with an infection in his foot, in Delhi’s Dilshad Garden area on Tuesday.

A retired government employee, identified as Amarjeet, had nobody to look after him as his children live in Canada, while his wife had died few years ago, said media reports.

He was discovered by police after neighbours complained of foul smell emanating from the house. Police was alerted on Saturday.

As per media reports, the retiree hadn’t eaten in days and was severely dehydrated. When the police rescued him, he appeared to have a maggot infection on the foot and was in a disoriented state of mind.

Amarjeet was later handed over to a local NGO, which will now rehabilitate him, police said.

On a pension of Rs 2,500 per/month, Amarjeet was living in a single room, where he would lock himself when he wasn’t expecting visitors.

“He has been living inside his one-room house for some years, and had rented out some of the rooms in the building to a local for Rs 4,000,” the officer said.

Locals claimed they never saw his children, but would notice a woman come every once in a while. The man was living off food ration handed over to him by a relative, who also appeared to have stopped visiting him of late.
