The Delhi Police have nabbed a Bangladeshi national from Kolkata for allegedly sending a hoax e-mail to the Delhi airport mentioning safety issues in a Delhi- Kolkata flight on February 27, saying that a person was carrying explosives, the police said on Monday.
It was found that the man identified as Mohammad Nazrul Islam had sent the email to get the flight cancelled in a bid to not let his brother-in-law from Punjab reach Kolkata and meet him.
According to DCP IGI Airport Usha Rangnani, “On February 27, a complaint from DIAL Airport Security Officer was received at IGI Airport police station, alleging that a threat e-mail was received about someone carrying explosives and a request made to check every bag and luggage.”
The police mounted technical surveillance and began tracing the email received at the airport, which finally led to a hotel in Kolkata’ Park Street.
However, things became a little difficult as there were multiple guests, who had been using the Wi-Fi from where the email was sent.
As per police, at that time 40 guests were staying in that hotel and all of them were using the Wi-Fi connection and almost all of them were Bangladeshi nationals.
The concerned Internet Service Provider (ISP) was contacted to retrieve the internet usage data from the routers installed at the hotel but they showed their inability to retrieve any data.
Delhi Police team meticulously examined each of the 40 hotel guests and during verification of the guests, it was revealed that one person, Amardeep Kumar, had come in the hotel to meet his relative after taking the said flight from Delhi.
On questioning, he told that he had come to meet his brother-in-law Nazrul Islam who had been staying here for almost a month.
Later, during sustained interrogation Nazrul confessed his guilt and disclosed that he had sent the email to get that flight cancelled so that Kumar is not able to reach Kolkata.
He further revealed that he is a Bangladeshi national and studied Airlines, Tourism and Hospitality from a university in Punjab in 2017 where he met a girl Soniya, whom he later got married by befooling her saying that he was pursuing PhD from the US and also has a VISA.
However, soon after marriage, the wife got suspicious and insisted on going to the US with him, while the accused kept on deferring on pretext of being stuck in Kolkata due to ongoing farmers’ agitation.
He further stated that he was staying in India to avoid his lenders in Bangladesh as he is under a debt of around 50 lakh takas, the police added.
