Delhi Minister Atishi on Thursday urged LG VK Saxena to provide houses to all those whose residences, such as shanties, temporary structures, etc., were demolished in the city over the past year as part of drives conducted by different agencies working under the Centre like the DDA, ASI, and others.

Responding to LG’s statement in the morning regarding providing a house to rat-hole miner Wakeel Hasan, whose home was demolished, Atishi emphasised at a press conference here that the LG must also consider those who lost their homes and provide them housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, in line with the announcement made for the rat-hole miner.

Thanking the LG for his gesture, Atishi pointed out that a large number of shanties, make-shift houses, and dwellings belonging to the poor have been brought down in the past year as part of demolition drives, emphasising the need for compensating these affected individuals as well.

Taking a dig at the Centre and the LG, Atishi said that the agencies had been particularly harsh on the poor people by demolishing their homes even during the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan after obtaining special permission for the demolition activities.

She cited the demolition drives near the Tughlaqabad Fort, Ghosia Colony in Mehrauli, slums behind the Sunder Nursery, Karkardooma Camp, and various other places, where residents were forced onto streets after their dwellings were razed by the agencies.

“I urge the honorable LG to provide housing under the PM Awas Yojana to all those people whose dwellings were demolished, akin to the announcement made for the rat-hole miner.”

Atishi stated that the Delhi government is in constant touch with rat-hole miners and extending all-out support to them as well as others who lost roofs over their heads due to the demolition drives.
