On Sunday, after more than 12 hours of continuous efforts by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) with the help of the Fire Department, the man’s body was recovered from the 40 feet deep borewell located at the Delhi Jal Board’s sewage treatment plant in Keshopur, West Delhi.
The width of the borewell is said to be around 12 inches and the rescue agency had to do parallel digging along the borewell in a bid to reach out to the victim. However, they could only pull out his body.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Water Minister Atishi expressed grief on the death of the man on Sunday. Kejriwal also thanked the NDRF team for the 14-hour-long rescue operation to help Delhi.
Atishi, who had visited the spot, said the borewell, which was not in use, was inside a locked room and had alleged that someone would have broken into the room.
The minister had directed the chief secretary for an inquiry into the incident and ordered to seal all the unattended and defunct borewells across the city, be private or under the government, within 48 hours.
She had said if lapses are found on the part of DJB’s officials in this regard, they will be suitably punished.
The minister also said that the DJB land was handed over to the Delhi Metro in 2020.
However, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation later informed that the borewell was not made by them, nor did they use it.
The DMRC said the pump room where the borewell was located belonged to the DJB, and the same was already present at the time when the DMRC took over the surrounding area for construction.
