For a comprehensive educational uprising, it is necessary to understand child psychology and incorporate robust indigenous curriculums
Child psychology-centric teaching methods should be adopted for better learning by students, experts stressed during a workshop and interactive session on “understanding child psychology and helping students with special needs in learning” at Mind Tree School, IIT Kamand campus on Tuesday.
Renowned child psychologist Devika, who has been working for an institution for inclusive education at Kochin, said children are like flower buds who, if handled inappropriately, may not be able to develop their full potential.

She termed teachers the second parent and said the onus lies on them to become change agents for societal transformation.

She stressed on the need to adopt child psychology-centric pedagogy in classroom management so that the teachers may be able to know why a child is behaving in a particular way.
She suggested teachers not to compare among students, as each student has different needs and he or she should be provided with a special training as per his or her needs.
“Professional assessment of any child who is not responsive needs to be done with full cooperation from parents. At school’s level, teachers can try to give a child a special attention,” she said.
She also suggested that teachers can engage the hyperactive student in additional physical activity to channelise his or her extra energy.
The teachers were also apprised about the continuous and comprehensive evaluation, besides how to evaluate students using play-way techniques such as group games, fun activities and puzzles, she added.
