A massive rescue operation involving personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was launched immediately. Divers from the Indian Navy joined the search on Sunday morning.

The four have been identified as Krishna Chaitanya Reddy (18), Praveen K (18), Srinadh N (19) and Raj Kumar (19). All four were from Andhra Pradesh. The bodies have been shifted to a government hospital in Vijayawada for autopsy.

Vijaya Krishnan, Krishna district Collector (in-charge), had on Saturday said the students might have failed to gauge the force of the current.

“Everything happened in two minutes. By the time the patrol teams in the area arrived, everything happened,” she said.
