The representatives of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the managing director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), urging him to reverse its decision of implementing the second fare hike in less than six months.
The AAP also threatened to launch a protest campaign if DMRC goes ahead with the fare hike.
Metro rides are set to increase by a minimum of Rs 10 from October. This is the second time in the year that the fares are to be increased. The last increase was in May when the minimum fare went up from Rs 8 to Rs 10 and the maximum from Rs 30 to Rs 50.
Terming the decision of the DMRC “unjustified”, the memorandum said that the proposed hike will be against the Fare Fixation Committee’s recommendation that “there shall be a gap of one year between two fare hikes”.
“We therefore, appeal to the DMRC to reverse its decision of implementing the second hike in less than six months, which will adversely affect the common man of Delhi, apart from reducing Metro’s own commuters and forcing them to look for alternate modes of transport,” the memorandum said.
“We hope that the Delhi Metro will see reason in the logic that commuters will not be put to hardship, failing which the Aam Aadmi Party MLAs will be forced to protest against this hasty and unjustified decision,” it added.
