Delhi’s Shahdara Police Station marked a momentous milestone on Tuesday, celebrating 110 years of service since its establishment on January 7, 1915. Over the decades, it has been at the center of historic events, from detaining freedom fighters to safeguarding modern-day residents.
The station’s historical significance includes the detention of revolutionaries such as Sukhdev and members of the Kakori train robbery group. Initially, its jurisdiction covered the entire trans-Yamuna area of Delhi, playing a pivotal role in upholding law and order during colonial rule.

One notable event occurred in 1928 when Sukhdev Singh, a member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), was detained at Shahdara PS after the assassination of British official John Saunders. He was held alongside other iconic revolutionaries, Bhagat Singh and Rajguru, marking a significant chapter in India’s struggle for independence.

The police station also played a key role in the aftermath of revolutionary acts like the Kakori Train Robbery of 1925. Members of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) involved in this daring heist to fund the freedom struggle were arrested and held at the station.
The first-ever FIR at Shahdara Police Station was lodged on its inauguration day, January 7, 1915. Filed in Urdu, it detailed a complaint by Khazan Singh, who reported a nighttime house-breaking incident under Section 457 of the Indian Penal Code.
Reflecting on the legacy of the station, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam remarked, “Over the past 110 years, the Shahdara Police Station has transformed to meet the evolving needs of the community. Today, it stands as a modern institution dedicated to the safety and well-being of Delhi’s citizens.”
He further added, “On this occasion, we honor the memory of the freedom fighters who were detained, interrogated, and imprisoned here. Their sacrifices in the fight for India’s independence are immortalized in the annals of this station’s history.”
