108 ambulance service handles over one million cases in seven years

The 108 emergency ambulance service in Himachal Pradesh has handled over one million cases since it took over operations in December 2010. The 108 National Ambulance Service with a fleet of 198 ambulances spread across different parts of the state achieved the milestone on 7 February by handling 10,29,520 emergencies. Out of these, 10,00,031 are medical related emergencies while 23,681 were police related emergencies and 5,808 were fire-related emergencies.

The Kangra district reported highest number of emergencies (1.53 lakh), followed by Shimla (around 1.47 lakh) and Mandi (1.42 lakh). The lowest number of emergencies was reported in Una district at 55,598.
State head of 108 Ambulance service Mehul Sukumaran said the service has proved to be a boon for pregnant women with handling of more than 2,03,958 pregnancy related emergencies of which 8919 successful deliveries been conducted with the assistance of staff in the ambulance as well as at scene.

So far, 77357 precious lives have been saved so far till June 2017.He said the 108 Emergency Response Centre at Dharampur in Solan district on an average receives 2573 calls per day and efforts are made to reach the site of Emergency at the earliest.

“The entire process is completed within a span of 89 seconds,” he said. Despite the difficult terrain and widely scattered and thinly populated areas, the scheme has been a great success in Himachal Pradesh with an average response time of a mere 12 minutes and 10 second in urban areas and 35 minutes and 08 second in the rural areas.
