Coal import by domestic thermal plants declines
This demonstrates an increased reliance on domestic coal supplies for these sectors
The quicker coal movement in the country also reflects the better performance of Indian Railways. The faster movement of coal also enables power plants to function more efficiently.
Coal production has achieved a significant 11.83 per cent spike in February over the corresponding month in previous year, the Ministry of Coal said on Tuesday.
In February, the Ministry of Coal obtained 96.60 Million Tonne (MT) coal production, surpassing the figures of 86.38 MT of the corresponding month in previous year.
The production of Coal India Limited (CIL) has risen to 74.76 MT in February 2024 as compared to 68.78 MT in the same month last year with a growth of 8.69 per cent, it said.

Up to February 2024, the cumulative coal production has seen a quantum jump to 880.72 MT in FY’ 23-24 as compared to 785.39 MT during the same period in FY’ 22-23, with a growth of 12.14 per cent.
Additionally, coal dispatch witnessed a significant boost in February 2024, reaching an impressive 84.78 MT, showcasing notable progress compared to the 74.61 MT recorded in February 2023, with a growth rate of 13.63 per cent.
At the same time, Coal India Limited dispatch demonstrated outstanding performance, reaching 65.3 MT in February 2024, compared to 58.28 MT in the same month last year, representing a growth of 12.05 per cent, the data released by the ministry said.
The Cumulative Coal Dispatch has seen a significant increase to 882.44 MT in FY’ 23-24 as compared to 794.41 MT during the corresponding period in FY’ 22-23 with a growth of 11.08 per cent.
Recently, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry has released the combined Index of Eight Core Industries that registered an increase by 3.6 per cent in January 2024 as compared to the Index of January 2023.
The highest growth was seen in the Coal sector when its production increased by 10.2 per cent in January, 2024 over the same month last year.
Its cumulative index increased by 12.2 per cent during April to January, 2023-24 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
