An integration of organic photodetector and organic spin valve in a single device brought the Bengal government’s gold medal for a PhD researcher with the Kazi Nazrul University in Asansol.
Apurba Pal, a researcher, devised the idea under the supervision of his KNU guides Dr Puja De and Prof JN Roy of physics department in collaboration with Dr S M Yusuf, head, solid state physics division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Apurba, according to registrar, KNU, “..is involved in a project titled ‘integration of organic photodetector and spin valve for development of novel spin controlled magnetic organic photodetector promoted by Centre’s department of science and technology.”

Apurba used an organic ferrimagnetic layer vanadium tetracyanoethylene and demonstrated the co-existence of optical response and spin valve property in the same device at room temperature. This work on the field of organic opto-spintronics can be utilized for the development of eco-friendly electro-optical hybrid computing and LiFi technologies, he claimed. LiFi is a wireless communication technology that allows use of light to transmit data that was introduced first by German physicist Herald Haas.
