Day 1 of admissions at Delhi University proved to be an ordeal for hundreds of newcomers. After the announcement of the first cut-off on Friday evening, students flocked to colleges to secure their seats but were unable to pay their fees as DU’s admission portal did not open.

Colleges were also not able to approve admissions due to problems with the online ‘dash board’ provided to them. Each college has its own dash board provided by the university.

Colleges were helpless as admissions cannot be approved and finalised unless the fees are paid by students through the centralised portal. Colleges tried their best to help out the students. “We are making files of all the candidates and are verifying documents through forensics. However, students are not able to pay the fees because the portal is not opening. But their admission will be secure as soon as the portal becomes functional and fees are paid,” said PC Tulsian, principal of Ramjas College. Many principals were reluctant to talk on the issue. “Nobody dares to point a finger at biggies in the DU admission process,” said a university employee.

Students visiting SRCC, Hindu, DRC, SGTB Khalsa College and other colleges in north and south campus of DU had to face similar problems.. Students and harried parents mocked at the ‘Digital India’ programme, “It’s pathetic that a university located in the national capital cannot manage its online system. Digital DU is a roadblock to digital India,” said a frustrated parent.

A DU official related with the admission process said the fee link/portal would be activated soon.

Many colleges were not accepting provisional certificates from students and were asking for originals. A girl who did her intermediate (10+2) from a CBSE board school in Saudi Arabia was seen running from pillar to post as the college refused to accept her provisional mark-sheet and asked for the original one, “It is not our fault as we have not received original mark-sheet from our school. Moreover, my mark-sheet is duly attested,” she said.
