World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is an annual celebration of its principles and is celebrated on 8 May each year.

This date is the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant, who was born 8 May 1828. He is the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize

On the occasion President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Francesco Rocca, and President of the ICRC Peter Maurer in a joint statement voiced their gratitude for the work done by lmost 12 million staff and volunteers.

“Every day, they work with people facing the worst moments of their lives – crises, war and disaster. They are the first responders and frontline ambassadors of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement,” said the statement.

“The growing strength and reach of our global network is because of people like them: around the world, in dangerous and unstable places, neutral, independent and impartial humanitarian action has the best chance to reach those most in need. If we can ever claim to be everywhere for everyone, it will also be because of people like them”, added the statement.
