In what comes as a one of its kind initiative in West Bengal, the transport department today rolled out intercepting vehicles for enhanced enforcement by the motor vehicle officials.

The vehicles include cars with various devices to catch violation of motor vehicles rules. The vehicles named as ‘interceptor cars’ were trundled and would be handed over to motor vehicle inspectors of various districts of the state, including Kolkata.

According to transport minister Snehasis Chakraborty, there were no such vehicles in the state. “We have handed over the vehicles to the motor vehicle inspectors. There were no such dedicated cars with the motor vehicle officials in West Bengal. The enforcement used to be done by utilizing vehicles of our department or even other departments,” informed Mr Chakraborty.

To begin with, 10 such four wheelers were introduced today that would be used by the officials from north Bengal and south Bengal. The fleet is to have more such vehicles expanding to every district in future. The initiative, as underscored by the minister, is aimed at enhancing the enforcement in the state. “A strong enforcement team would be readied in West Bengal. We are preparing for a dedicated enforcement team so that more and more vehicles are checked. This would also ensure that vehicles ply with valid documents. The cars have various devices, including that for checking the speed limits,” added the minister.

As learnt from Mr Chakraborty, the cost of each vehicle by Mahindra is around Rs 22 lakh. The car includes devices like fire extinguisher, battery, space for paper storage, public addressing system, tint meter to detect vehicles having films on the glasses, lux meter to check the intensity of light like LED lights in some of the trucks and so on. “The car is equipped with devices that would prompt if a vehicle breaks the speed while a camera installed would click pictures, collect data from Vahan portal and an e-challan would be generated,” said an official of Kasba.
