City’s tramlovers can now have more fun over tea or coffee in the nostalgic ambiance of the heritage transport. The state transport department launched a café named ‘Tram World Café’ at the Tram World located in Gariahat.

The trial run of the café was being carried out since Durga Puja and was received by the citizens of Kolkata. The place is to include books, handicrafts and some co-working space soon, according to sources in the department. The café has been set up with an idea to enable Kolkatans who want to spend some peaceful moments with their family and friends while sipping a cup of coffee against the backdrop of Kolkata’s iconic vintage tram car.

The Tram World Café was inaugurated by state transport minister Snehasis Chakraborty in presence of chairman West Bengal Transport Corporation Madan Mitra and the managing director of WBTC, Rajanvir Singh Kapur today.

“The Tram World Café at the Tram World Kolkata will be a unique gift for tram lovers,” said the state transport minister during the launching ceremony. “We are glad that the people are appreciating this effort and being able to spend quality time with family,” he added.

Notably, the department had launched ‘The Tram World’ at Gariahat in December 2020 to mark the 140 years of the Calcutta Tramway Company which was formed and registered in London on 22 December, 1880.

The idea was to convert old trams that would have headed to the scrap yard, into a permanent area where tram lovers could spend some time.
