Mrs Bhattachcrya said it was initially decided that the women workers would visit 10,000 households across the state, but she was confident that they would be able to visit 20,000 households to make women aware of various state government programmes.

She said Didir Suraksha Kawach was meant to empower women.

“Our leader Mamata Banerjee believes in women empowerment and through various schemes women have been empowered,” she said.

Miss Banerjee’s initiative, Kanyashree, where scholarships are given to girls to carry on with education from schools to the post-graduation level has been recognized by the UNO. Another scheme Sabuj Sathi where bicycles are given free to the students of state-run and aided schools and madrasas, has successfully brought down school dropouts among girls.

The Swasthya Sathi Card enables people to receive free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh and is used in the name of the senior most woman member of the family. Through Lakshmir Bhandar, women of general caste between the age group of 18 to 60 years get Rs 500 per months and those belonging to the SC and ST communities get Rs 1,000 per month. Mrs Bhattacharya said nowhere in the country the women are looked after so well by the state government.
