Uma’s husband, Naresh Das, son Amit Das and daughter-in-law Madhumita Das were taken into custody following an investigation into allegations that they compelled Uma to take her own life. The incident came to light when Uma’s lifeless body was discovered from a well near their residence on Kailash Ghosh Road. Upon being rushed to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, doctors declared her dead. Subsequently, a relative of Uma lodged a complaint with the police, accusing Naresh, Amit, and Madhumita of mentally harassing Uma and forcing her into suicide.
Based on the allegations, the police initiated an inquiry and, on Friday, apprehended the three accused. They are now in custody until 7 March, as per the court’s directive. Meanwhile, the police have heightened security around the detained family members. Locals have expressed resentment towards Naresh, Amit, and Madhumita, accusing them of subjecting Uma to mental abuse for property-related reasons. Uma’s niece, Mithu Nandi claimed, “Due to property disputes, Naresh, Amit, and Madhumita used to harass Uma relentlessly. She wasn’t even allowed to eat.”
