Bengal has donated 1.153 lakh units of blood in 2023, which, the West Bengal Voluntary Blood Donors Society is set to scale up to 1.50 lakh units by the end of 2024 through hyper-activation of camps by the voluntary organizations at the 87 operating blood centres across the state, said Kobi Ghosh, the general secretary of the society.

In its two-day state conference at the Burdwan Medical College auditorium, 339 delegates from 21 districts had assembled and discussed in 12 consecutive sessions, flagged off by Padmashree Arunodoy Mondal. Mohammed Mohibullah, a veteran representative of the Bangladesh Blood Donor’s Society also joined the conference as a distinguished delegate. He said, “We’ve incorporated a sustained route of voluntary donation to counter paid donation. I last donated my blood on Language Day on 21 February.”

Bangladesh, incidentally, recorded 25 per cent nation’s blood supply from voluntary donation against 20 per cent from the paid donors. Ghosh said, “We’ll forward an appeal to the state seeking reintroduction of distribution of badges for the donors as a mark of recognition.
