Shubho Noboborsho 1426: The Bengali new year is here, and the community across the world is celebrating the day with great enthusiasm and fanfare. Called Poila Boishakh or Pohela Boishakh, the day is celebrated in West Bengal, Tripura and the neighbouring Bangladesh.
While Bengalis in India celebrate the day on the first day of the month of Baishakh according to the lunisolar calendar, Bangladesh celebrates Pohela Boishakh on 14 April every year.
This year, Indian Bengalis will be welcoming Noboborsho, the year 1426, on April 15.

In Bengal, a trip to temples, new clothes, and cultural programmes are usually a must on Poila Boishakh, apart from of course feasting on good old traditional fares. For the business community, the day begins with a special prayer to God for their ledger books, also known as haal khata or kheror khata, the traditional hand-bound copy with a red cloth cover.
