Modi was ambitious to announce a Congress mukt Bharat (Congress-free India) but interestingly, his BJP is now a ‘Congress yukt (Congressmen-linked party), said cricketer-turned-politician Kirti Azad here this afternoon.
Azad’s assertion came today in the wake of mass poaching of 55 former MLAs from the Congress in Maharashtra in the last week of February. The MLAs followed the footsteps of former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan. Barely a week ago, former Congress working president of Maharashtra Basavraj Patil too deserted the grand old party and joined the lotus symbol. Azad said, “This is not the BJP of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Modi has reduced it to a private company where the person who speaks the truth can’t stay.” This he said a day ahead of former judge Abhijit Ganguly’s scheduled joining with the BJP in presence of Narendra Modi.

Kirti Azad was elected an MP from Darbhanga, Bihar three times since 1999 from the BJP but was defeated in Dhanbad in 2019 while contesting as a Congress candidate. He joined Congress after a debate on Arun Jaitly’s cricket administration issues. Today, he ridiculed Modi’s “indulgence” to Vangsvaad (familycracy) saying: “Why Amit Shah’s son Jai Shah heads as the country’s cricket chief? I ask Modi to shed light on this.”
On 23 November, 2021, Azad joined the TMC, ahead of the Goa Assembly Elections and had declared that he’d work under Mamata Banerjee till his retirement from politics.
