Subrata Saha, a minister in the Mamata Banerjee government, died of cardiac arrest in the forenoon today at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital at Berhampore, sources said. The 69 year-old minister of state for food processing and horticulture (independent charge) was elected as MLA from Sagardighi in Murshidabad district for three consecutive terms.
He was the first and only MLA of the Trinamul Congress from Murshidabad district in 2011 when the TMC led by Mamata Banerjee came to power toppling the Left Front government in Bengal. Saha, a famed face of politics in Bengal, was originally a Congress leader who did politics with veteran statesman like Pranab Mukherjee, Gani Khan Chowdhury, Adhir Chowdhury and lastly with Mamata Banerjee who had made him PWD minister in 2011.
Saha was known for responsible politics. For the cause of free and fair election, he ensured participation of opposition parties in rural polls earlier in areas under Sagardighi Assembly constituency at a time when TMC was accused of poll violence, uncontested wins and unfair polls elsewhere. Chief minister, Mamata Banerjee today deputed her cabinet minister, Firhad Hakim to attend the last rites of Subrata Saha.
“With the demise of Subrata Saha, my senior colleague, we lost one of our great friends,” said Hakim here today. Murshidabad MP, Abu Taher Khan. also condoled Saha’s death. “Subratada’s death is irreparable loss in politics”, said the district TMC chief, Shaoni Singha Roy. The Jangipur MLA, Jakir Hossain was in tears while stating, “He was like our guardian.” Saptarshi Saha, the only son of the deceased, is also a TMC leader and a college lecturer.
