Gurusaday Dutt, who was a civil servant, founded the Bratachari movement in 1932. It was a movement for spiritual and social improvement with an aim to raise the national awareness of people of undivided India regardless of their religion, caste, gender or age.
It was a movement with a comprehensive programme ranging from physical, mental, and intellectual culture, based on folk traditions of physical exercise, art, dance, drama, music, singing and social service.
The Bratacharis believe in values of good deeds, strengthen fellowship and develop the mind and body through dance.
Dutt passed the Indian Civil service (ICS) examination in 1905. Having finished 7th in the first part of the examination, he stood 1st in the second part. Overall, he secured 1st position in the Open Competitive Service examination that year, becoming the first Indian to have ever done so.
