Promises matter in elections because voters lack rationality. As election history shows, freebies do get votes. Hitherto, it was a time tested method of electoral success for a desperate opposition.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday remembered poet, playwright and musician Dwijendralal Ray on his 105th death anniversary.

Dwijendralal Ray was a Bengali poet, playwright, and musician. Ray regarded as on of the most important figures in early Bengali literature was was known for his nationalist songs and historical plays.
His songs known as Dwijendrageeti or the songs of Dwijendralal, which number over 500, create a separate subgenre of Bengali music.
Two of his most famous compositions are Dhana Dhanya Pushpa Bhara and Banga Amar Janani Amar.
His composition Dhana Dhanya Pushpa Bhara is immensely popular in both Bangladesh and India, and was reportedly considered a possible choice to become the national anthem of Bangladesh in 1971.
