Mamata likely to visit Gangasagar in first week of Jan

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to visit Gangasagar on 4 January 2023 to check the preparations at the mela premises. Like in previous years, she may also visit the Kapil Muni Ashram during her visit and return to Kolkata the next day.

The mela is likely to witness a huge crowd during these two days. The chief minister had held a high-level meeting at Nabanna on 21 December to take stock of the preparedness and had then expressed her wish to visit the mela premises sometime early next month. In view of the apprehension of a rise in Covid cases, Miss Banerjee had said that if required, the mela would be conducted following necessary pandemic protocols. Last time, around 30 lakh people visited the mela and the government expects the footfall to be much higher this year. The South 24-Parganas district administration held a meeting to discuss the various measures that are to be taken during the mela.

The district officials plan to complete the preparations before the chief minister’s visit. State irrigation minister Partha Bhowmik, PWD minister Pulok Roy and sundarban affairs minister Bankim Hazra have been given the special assignment to oversee the mela preparations. The three ministers have already visited the mela venue.
Senior BJP leader and Member of Parliament Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, a member of the Parliamentary Committee for home affairs, has written today to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to increase the monthly assistance under the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme to Rs 2,000.
Visibly upset, BJP’s Siliguri MLA Sankar Ghosh, who is also the chief whip of the Opposition in the state Assembly, expressed frustration over his inability to utilise the Bidhayak Fund (MLA fund) for local area development.
