The boundary wall of Pratichi Bhawan will remain intact after the Suri District Court cancelled the notification issued by the Visva-Bharati University (VBU) to vacate 13 decimals of land.

Exactly a year ago, CM Mamata Banerjee had handed over the papers at his house in Santiniketan.

The advocate of the Nobel laureate, professor Amartya Sen, today said that the Suri District Court has cancelled the notification issued by the VBU earlier regarding the possession of land in a judgement.

The former vice-chancellor of the Visva Bharati University, professor Bidyut Chakraborty had claimed that Amartya Sen is illegally possessing 13 decimal of land and directed him to return the land.

The officials served notices at the Pratichi Bhawan at that time and even offered a joint measurement of the land.

Amartya Sen had moved to Suri District Court challenging the VBU order. Professor Kshiti Mohan Sen, former vice-chancellor of VBU was the grandfather of Amartya Sen, while his father Ashutosh Sen had set up Pratichi Bhawan.

His mother Amita Sen was also very close to founder of VBU and Asia’s first Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Chief minister Miss Mamata Banerjee right from the beginning had lent her support to Amartya Sen and in fact, visited his house to hand over the original papers related to his house in Santiniketan on 31 January, 2023.

During her visit the CM had promised Z-Plus security for Amartya Sen and posted a permanent police camp outside the house.

The house is on 1.38 acre of land and was built almost eighty years ago. Mr Sen mostly stays in the USA.

Mr Sen’s advocate termed it as a big win and said that the court has commented that there is no basis in issuing such notifications.

Former VBU VC Mr Chakraborty has hence retired.

However, it is still not clear what will be the next step of Visva-Bharati University on this land issue.
