There was an immoral electoral alliance between CPM, Congress and BJP that led to defeat of ruling Trinamul Congress candidate in Sagardighi Assembly bypolls in Murshidabad district, said chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday.

CPM-backed Congress candidate Bayron Biswas won the seat with a margin of nearly 23,000 votes defeating his rival Trinamul contestant Debashis Banerjee.

While reacting to the bypoll results, the Trinamul Congress chief Mamata claimed, “I don’t blame people for our defeat in Sagardighi by-election. An immoral alliance of CPM-Congress and BJP has defeated our candidate. BJP transferred their votes to Congress.”

“The BJP had a vote share of 22 per cent in the last assembly election in Sagardighi but it has come down to 13 per cent in the bypolls. The CPM and Congress together made the alliance silently. How can they fight the BJP in coming elections,” She said.

“The CPM and Congress together have played a communal card in Sagardighi. How are they anti-BJP? It’s a moral defeat to them,” she claimed, adding, “I have seen Adhir Chowdhury’s statement. He has admitted that BJPCPM helped them win.”

While reacting to Sagardighi bypoll result, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, state Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the parliament, said, “Trinamul earlier has defeated Congress many times by torturing people with help of police. As I said, Congress is not going to lose and today it is proved. Congress is a party that defeats.”

“Trinamul has betrayed Muslims and the latter know the ruling party in the state acts as an agent of BJP. Muslims can be cheated once but not always,” Chowdhury claimed.

“Mamata is finding it hard to digest the Trinamul Congress candidate’s defeat,” said Md Salim, CPM state secretary
