Krishnanagar, 17 Oct: In a proactive move ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations, the Chapra Police under Krishnanagar Police District in Nadia successfully seized a substantial cache of illegal firecrackers from Chapra Market. The operation led to the arrest of two individuals, identified as Sandip Garai and Sudip Garai, for storing the banned fireworks without valid licenses.
Acting swiftly on a credible tip-off, law enforcement officers conducted a targeted raid at Chapra Market, specifically targeting the shops of Sandip Garai and Sudip Garai. Subsequent investigations revealed that both individuals had been stockpiling a variety of prohibited firecrackers in their respective shops, in blatant violation of the law.
According to police sources, the seized firecrackers were not only illegal but also posed a significant threat to public safety due to their potential to cause accidents and fires. Authorities are concerned about the proliferation of such unauthorized explosive materials, especially in the run-up to festive occasions.
“We have seized around 100 kilograms of firecrackers worth Rs 4 lakh”, a police officer said.
The arrested duo were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Krishnanagar today, where the magistrate, after hearing pleas, remanded them into police custody for a day. The police have expressed their commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation and have warned against any attempts to engage in illegal activities, particularly concerning hazardous items like firecrackers.
The Chapra police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to the illegal sale and storage of fireworks. The crackdown on illegal firecrackers is part of the authorities’ efforts to guarantee a safe and joyous celebration of Durga Puja for everyone.
