Governor Dr C V Ananda Bose inaugurated the “Celebration of 250 years of Kolkata GPO” at the historic Kolkata GPO today.
Vineet Pandey, secretary (posts), Government of India, Niraj Kumar, chief postmaster general, West Bengal Circle and other senior officers and dignitaries were also present.
The Governor also inaugurated an exhibition named “Journey of Mails” at the Rotunda. Today, one special philatelic cover on “250 years of Kolkata GPO” and a gold-plated silver replica of India Postage Stamp on “Calcutta GPO Building” (issued in the year 1968) has also been released by the Governor.
The exhibition showcases the rich postal history of Bengal and journey of mails. 3D models of palanquin, bullock cart, railway mail coach, first mail carrier-aircraft along with historical seals of GPO, Postmark and Postcards from 250 Post Offices across West Bengal Circle are also displayed.
Competitive entries of photography, painting and sculpture-designing contests organized in connection with this celebration are also displayed for viewing by the general public.
The exhibition will be open for all from 11am to 7.30pm at Kolkata GPO from Friday till 19 March.
