Now green steel is the buzzword in the steel industry and the Australian experts, alongside the Indian technocrats have been accommodated to educate the domestic steel giants for five days for the purpose.
India Australia Mineral Scholar Network programme is part of a joint statement by Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 March, 2023 aiming to enhance overall bilateral involvement in a number of areas, including trade, investment green steel and critical minerals. The two PMs had signed a MoU in the first annual summit, in New Delhi on 10 March, 2023. “For the collaborative research on green steel and critical minerals the five days IAMSN programme is scheduled and the NIT, Durgapur significantly is the pioneering institution in the country that’s chosen for green steel,” said Prof Arvind Choubey, Director, NIT.

The short-term course arranged by Steel Authority of India plants of Durgapur and Burnpur, the officials said: “Is set to offer a comprehensive approach tackling carbon emissions in the steel sector, with a strong focus on sustainability.” The programme is structured to educate the participants on several critical hydrogen fundamentals and highlights the key strategies for decarbonisation, exploiting the potential of hydrogen-based processes, increasing energy efficiency, besides integrating renewable energy sources.

Four Australian professors, headed by Prof Geoff Brooks, besides the IIT professors from Kharagpur, Bombay, Hyderabad, Durgapur and Dhanbad have been assigned for the purpose.
