The West Bengal government has proposed to develop a model city at Sector VI in New Town-Rajarhat area. The industrial township will be environmentally sustainable with most modern amenities, state urban development and municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim said in the Assembly today.
Engineering institute, IIEST, Shibpur has prepared a draft plan after it was asked by the government for it and it is being studied by the department. He said the department has developed New Town Kolkata Township as a modern sustainable city of international standards.
Mr Hakim said the department has decided to supply filtered water to 100 per cent households in the urban area by 2023. The project to give 100 per cent coverage of urban households has been taken at an estimated cost of Rs 7,172 crore. The department has proposed to reduce the use of ground water and a scheme of using water of an existing natural water body at Basirhat at the cost of Rs 4.41 crore has been taken up.
The urban development and municipal affairs department has taken up a comprehensive waste management scheme titled Mission Nirmal Bangla Urban. The plan includes elimination of open defecation, eradication of manual scavenging, scientific management of solid waste and liquid waste, effective behavioural changes regarding healthy sanitation practices.
