Buoyed by the induction of former city mayor, Sovan Chatterjee, members of the BJP Legislative Party will be zeroing in on issues like the “political violence” in the state, dengue which is threatening to grow into an epidemic in some of the districts, “unacceptable condition” of tea garden workers and lack of preventive measures against elephant depredations in tea estates when the Assembly session starts from 26 August.
Incidentally, when number is considered to be a strong point in electoral politics, the strength of the BJP legislative party is being shown as 14 though it should be actually 15, it is learnt.
Though the defection of Chatterjee to BJP is being considered to be a triumph, whose vote share is almost rising on a linear curve, since the declaration of results of the Lok Sabha elections, the saffron camp is downplaying the induction of TMC MLA from Bibhum, Manirul Islam.
A fissure has emerged in the state BJP between state president Ghosh who opposes Manirul’s inclusion in the party and Mukul Roy, the leader who was instrumental in his walking into BJP.
Given the charges of atrocities on local BJP activists against the former TMC MLA, some of the BJP leaders have made it clear that they are unwilling to accept Manirul in their ranks. But there are no such reservations against Chatterjee who, it is felt, being in the know of many a game plan of the ruling party, will prove to be a potential match winner in the future political battles within House and outside.
