Miss Banerjee said Mukherjee was in the cabinet of Siddhartha Shankar Ray’s ministry at the age of 26 years. “When we formed the government in 2011, he was our important minister and will be remembered for giving good governance,” she said.
Recollecting her long association with Mukherjee, she said, “We had a very cordial relation with him. From his foreign trips, he always brought gifts for me. During one of his trips he brought sunglasses for me. During the inauguration of Ekdalia Evergreen Durga Puja, he always insisted that I chant from Chandi.”
She said, after “the CPM evicted hawkers from Gariahat in Operation Sunshine, we had organized a rally on the next day. More than 400 people joined the rally. After I went home Subrata da was arrested. Whenever he visited my chamber in Nabanna he asked for different kinds of food items and told him that boudi (his spouse) did not allow him to have most of them. “But I know where she keeps it and eat it when she is not around,” he would say.
Miss Banerjee said Mukherjee continues to inspire her and showed how a good government can help to serve people.
