Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has asked SSKM Hospital authorities to explore whether songs of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam can be played in every ward. She hopes music will not only give enjoyment to the patients, it will also provide a healing touch.
Miss Banerjee was prompted to ask the SSKM Hospital administration to explore the idea after an indoor patient’s daughter Payel Chakraboty requested the former to play songs of two legendary Bengali poets Tagore and Nazrul inside wards at the premier hospital. Miss Banerjee had visited SSKM Hospital to see veteran singer Pratul Mukjerjee at the hospital and she stayed there for about 40 minutes.

The chief minister while coming out and getting into her car spoke to some relatives of patients admitted to the hospital. Payel, one of the relatives waiting there at the hospital, requested her to instal music boxes inside so that patients can listen Rabindrasangeet and Nazrulgeeti as relief from mental agony.
Miss Banerjee accepted the proposal of Payel, a resident of Simurali, and asked administrative officials like the director of SSKM Hospital and others to look into it. “Chief minister heard my proposal and asked officials of the hospital to take necessary steps. I am thankful to her,” Payel said. Some senior doctors at the SSKM Hospital felt that music therapy can ease anxiety and nervousness of patients.
After coming to power in Bengal in 2011, Mamata Banerjee government had installed music systems in every major crossing in the city and district towns where Bengali songs starting from Rabindrasangeet, Nazrulgeeti to old movies are played throughout the day
