A PMAY (Prime Minister Awas Yojana) beneficiary was yet to erect a house, yet he was disbursed the last installment six months ago, which irked the two-member central team visiting the East Burdwan villages to inquire about the status of the PMAY houses. In Memari-2, the team visited Harindanga, Durlavpara, Roypara, Paldanga villages after a brief discussion with the local BDO, Saikat Maji.

They talked to a number of ‘deprived’ villagers who allegedly were denied houses and were agitating. At local Bishnupur village, they met a beneficiary Shambhu Ghosh and asked, why was he still residing in a cottage though his last installment was cleared six months ago? Ghosh pleaded about his ailing health condition.

The two-member team of Pradumna Kar and Manoj Kumar from the Operation Research Centre, Delhi also inquired why a listed beneficiary Manjuri Mandi of Sontla village was denied a house? Some listed beneficiaries in Bohar, Harindanga area like Sushil Roy, Izazur Sheikh, Hashem Mondal also complained that their names were discarded by the local BDO.

The BDO said that some names were discarded after verification because they didn’t have their personal land, a mandatory provision for the scheme.
