Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay on Sunday said he will resign from his post on 5 March. Justice Gangopadhyay said he will send his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court and Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. “These days I will not do any legal work, I will just remove all the cases listed with me,” added the judge.
The judge said he has decided to step into a “larger sphere” of activities. “If I join any political party and if they nominate me, I will surely consider that decision,” Justice Gangopadhyay told a local news channel. There were speculations that he would contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Tamluk ~ a seat which BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari held from 2009 to 2016. The judge said he would answer all questions regarding his resignation and what is next for him on Tuesday.
In 2022, he directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe alleged irregularities in recruitment of teachers and non-teaching staff in government schools in West Bengal. Last year, Justice Gangopadhyay drew the Supreme Court’s ire after he gave an interview to a news channel about the pending case relating to the teachers’ recruitment scam. CJI DY Chandrachud then ordered the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court to reassign the case to another judge. Justice Gangopadhyay was scheduled to retire from his judicial services in August 2024.

He is currently hearing cases related to labour affairs and industrial relations. “No matter whether Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay wants to join politics, he’s not a person of that stature who deserves much importance,” opined Trinamul Congress leader Dola Sen. Ms Sen, who attended a cricket league match in Memari this afternoon, said: “India is a democratic country and anyone is free to move wherever he wants to go. It would be better if Justice Gangopadhyay can help improve people’s welfare.”
