People of the Delta and Climate Change
The 29the edition of the United Nation’s Conference of Parties on Environment (COP29) will begin next month. The countdown calls for different aspects of climate change to be discussed.
In the coming days, an aviary, housing various species of birds, is set to open at the Jharkhali in the Sundarbans delta. The aviary, designed to showcase different types of birds to tourists, will feature separate enclosures for common birds and waterfowl. Sources said that around 145 types of birds are found in the Sunderbans’ land and water areas.
Two enclosures are nearing completion, with arrangements being made for the birds’ well-being. Last year, the Sundarbans showcased its rich avian diversity during the Bird Festival, revealing the presence of approximately 145 species of water and land birds. However, many birds face health challenges, including injuries from debris or entanglement in fishing nets. 4
Following their rescue, the plan is to provide medical care and house them in the newly constructed aviaries. To enhance the experience for tourists, authorities will issue brochures highlighting the aviary’s location and the diverse bird species within. Forest officials emphasise the importance of conservation efforts, indicating that after rehabilitation, the birds will be reintroduced into their natural habitat.

The Sundarbans, known for its tiger population, also sees similar efforts in treating injured Bengal tigers. In cases where tigers are found ailing in the jungle or local areas, they undergo treatment before being released back into the wild if deemed fit. Despite the challenges posed by the mangrove storms, the Sundarbans continues to be home to three resident tigers.
Many tourists, often more interested in the jungle’s captivating beauty, may now have the opportunity to witness both Bengal tigers and a diverse array of birds in their rehabilitated environments. The unveiling of the bird aviary is expected to be a highlight next month, according to the Department of Forests.
