Swami Gautamanandaji, vice-president of Ramakrishna Math and Mission will lay the foundation stone of a memorial building at the Alambazar Math premises on 1 February.
Alambazar Math had played a historic role in the Ramakrishna Movement with the monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna staying in the building from 1892 to 1898. After coming from the West in 1897, Swami Vivekananda had stayed at the Math. As a wandering monk in India and later in the West, Swamiji used to write letters to his brother months who used to stay at the Alambazar Math. After Sri Ramakrishna’s passing away in 1886, a band of youths, under the leadership of Swamiji, started staying in a dilapidated building at Baranagar. The days at Baranagar Math were spent in abject poverty. From there, the monastic disciples moved to Alambazar Math.
Ramakrishna Math, Belur had acquired the Alambabzar Math in 2023.
A memorial building will come up at Alambazar. A brief public meeting will be held after the foundation stone laying ceremony.
