The 100th electric locomotive of the year 2019-20 built by the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) rolled out from its ancillary unit at Hooghly district’s Dankuni near Kolkata.

He also mentioned that it is a matter of great pride and wished that CLW will scale even more heights in the days to come. Named after freedom fighter Chittaranjan Das, CLW is one of the largest locomotive manufacturers in the world under a single roof.

Almost all electric locomotives operating in the Indian Railways are manufactured at CLW.

Although initially it produced diesel and steam locomotives, currently it manufactures only electric locomotives. Earlier the Dankuni unit of Chittaranjan Locomotive Works produced 50 locomotives in 2018-19 in comparison to 25 locomotives produced in 2017-18.

This year’s production has broken all the previous records. This ancillary unit of CLW was established at Dankuni with a long term perspective to produce more 3-phase 6000 HP freight locomotives keeping in view the growth in freight traffic. This unit has enabled the parent unit at Chittaranjan to achieve the enhanced annual production capacity of 3-phase electric locomotives.
