While many actors gravitated towards urban-centric storylines, Mohanty chose to bring rustic, relatable stories to life — a decision that earned him both criticism and unwavering admiration.

At a time when the Odia film industry was struggling financially in the early ’90s, Mohanty’s popularity often gets credit for helping the industry survive.

Despite his stardom, he remained grounded, collaborating with independent filmmakers and earning respect from both mainstream and offbeat cinema circles. He won numerous awards, including several Filmfare Awards (East).

In early January, as his health deteriorated, Mohanty was admitted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar before being airlifted to Delhi for advanced treatment. He spent 20 days in intensive care before the curtains fell on his remarkable life.

Sritam Das, Secretary of the Odisha Cine Artists’ Association, confirmed that his mortal remains will reach Bhubaneswar by 11 am today, allowing fans to bid a final farewell to the iconic actor.
