The cold storage at Bhabanandapur village in Kalna-2 block resumed operation only yesterday aiming to gain business during the upcoming potato harvesting season. Giasuddin Sheikh, co-owner of the unit, said: “In the morning, a blast occurred at the machine room and a cloud of Ammonia gas started spreading around the storage hall, which turned fatal.” The police quizzed the cold storage owners and a case bringing charges of negligence causing death of workers has been initiated, the officials said.

The cold storage units utilising the Ammonia refrigeration system are highly susceptible to leaks, exposing labourers to the toxic gas. “Inhaling high concentration of Ammonia can cause severe respiratory irritation leading to death potential, if not the victims are attended on time,” said a senior physician with the Kalna hospital.
