Surgeon Vice Admiral Kavita Sahai, SM, VSM, assumed charge as Director General Medical Services (Navy), here today. Commissioned into the Army Medical Corps on December 30, 1986, she brings with her an illustrious career in military medicine.

An alumna of the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, Surgeon Vice Admiral Sahai specialized in Pathology and later pursued super-specialization in Oncopathology at AIIMS, New Delhi.

She has held key academic positions, including serving as the Professor and Head of the Department of Laboratory Sciences at the Army Hospital Research and Referral (AHRR) and Base Hospital Delhi Cantt (BHDC). Additionally, she was a Professor at the Department of Pathology at AFMC, Pune.

Before her current role, she made history as the first woman Commandant of the Army Medical Corps (AMC) Centre & College, as well as Officer-in-Charge of Records. Notably, she is the first woman to be elected as Colonel Commandant of the Army Medical Corps.

Surgeon Vice Admiral Sahai has a strong interest in medical education and was awarded the prestigious Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) Fellowship from Philadelphia, USA, in 2013-14.

In recognition of her exemplary service, she was awarded the Sena Medal in 2024 and the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2018. She has also received commendations from the Chief of the Army Staff twice (2008 and 2012) and from the GOC-in-C (Western Command) in 2010.
